Singer/Songwriter, Barbara Lewis (barbaralewis.com) performs powerful, entertaining, and highly emotional songs in the folk, pop, jazz and theatre idioms. Her authentic stage presence and great storytelling ability have earned her the reputation of being a born communicator. Impressed by her wide vocal range and the sensitivity of her song interpretations, Gazette music critic, Marc Lepage referred to her as “a hugely gifted singer”.

A versatile musician, Barbara has performed for both small and large audiences. Her repertoire includes songs in English, French and Spanish. To meet the needs of various venues and events, she has built flexibility into her concerts, performing on her own or with up to 7 accompanists. She opened for the International AIDS conference at the Montreal Palais Des Congrès in July 2022, performing for a live audience of 9000 and a live-streaming audience of 3000. She has also performed for two large MUHC (Montreal University Health Center) fundraisers at the Rialto Theatre in Montreal. (View a short video of clips.)

Artist’s Statement

I sing with a deep desire to connect emotionally with an audience. My performance style is very friendly. I often walk into the audience to engage more closely with the public. My singing style is virtuosic. Classically trained, I have a wide vocal range. I choose songs that allow me to use more colour and range than are usually heard in the folk, pop, jazz and theatre songs that I perform.

Sometimes I introduce a piece with a story or commentary about a current world situation. I love to laugh with an audience, so I always sing one or two novelty songs. For instance: the cowboy/yodelling song written by Stompin’ Tom Connors, Take me Back to Old Alberta! and Hank Williams’ well known song, Jambalaya.

My most ardent “fans” are men and women over the age of 45, but I often see younger people in the audience, too. Many people tell me after concerts that they were inspired by the songs. They both laughed and cried. The concert left them feeling uplifted. This is my hope – to leave members of the audience feeling bigger inside and happier about their lives. To keep my voice fresh and well-tuned, I continue to work with vocal coaches. I intend to sing as well as I can for as long as I can.

Other Musical Interests

Lewis is also a vocal coach. Her Youtube channel called, Singing After 40 has more than 150 videos that teach about singing and wellbeing to vocalists who are over 40. She creates video interviews of artists (musical and otherwise) about their art. She is the founder and editor of Singing Tips With Barbara Lewis.

Vocal Workshops

When appropriate, Barbara offers a vocal workshop after a concert. The concert/workshop sessions are tailored to audience needs.

Hobbies

Barbara loves to garden. She has great curiosity about the lives of trees, flowers and animals. Her feline friend, DD, has taught her a lot about life.
