Hello to all,
This free vocal warm-up brings together several exercises from the past month’s newsletters. (Look here to view past newsletters.)
The short work-out is intended to gently warm up your body & voice. Depending upon your voice type, (BASS, TENOR, MEZZO, SOPRANO) you should begin and end the exercise where you are very comfortable. Come and go in the exercise. Then turn me off, and do a few more of the exercises by yourself.
An early day warm up should not stretch your voice or your mind. At this point, you are just finding out how your voice “feels.” Is it elastic? Is it clear? Is your breathing easy and deep? If not, proceed very slowly. Your goal is to enjoy waking up your body and your voice. Practice for 10 minutes. Leave it for a few minutes, then come back and do another 10 minutes or so. “Baby” your voice into action.
Start with this breathing exercise:
BREATHING – Let your diaphragm gradually find its stretch as your rib cage gradually opens more fully. Breathe yourself awake. (zzzzzzzzzzzzz)
HUMMING – Here’s the Rolls Royce of morning wake-up vocalises. (I begin the exercise on a low F.)
MAH MAY MEE MOH MOO – Enjoy the mmmmm… followed by light, easy vowels. (I begin the exercise on an E)
YUM YUM – Again, go easy… Not too high, not too low. Sing only in the range that is easy.
EE STRETCH – If this exercise moves too quickly for you, do it without me!
Make this a fun stretch. Be a kid!
Are you awake?
I wish you great and easy singing!
